How to practise English speaking alone

You can practise speaking English alone by giving yourself a clear prompt and saying the answer aloud. A short listen-and-repeat routine helps you rehearse useful sentences before trying them in a conversation.

Choose a situation, not a random word list

Start with introducing yourself, buying something or describing your day. Rehearse one complete sentence at a time. For example, say “I would like a coffee, please,” then change one detail: “I would like a tea, please.” This creates a small speaking task rather than a reading exercise.

If you are unsure whether a sentence is correct, return to a provided example instead of improvising a long speech. A few clear sentences give you a manageable foundation for later conversation.

A repeatable solo speaking routine

  1. Listen to a short sentence and check its meaning.
  2. Repeat it aloud with the same main stress and pauses.
  3. Hide the sentence and say it from memory.
  4. Use a meaning prompt to recall it again after a short break.
  5. Rehearse one turn from a dialogue as if you were speaking to the other person.

If you choose to record yourself with a separate recorder, compare one feature at a time, such as whether the important words stand out. That is self-review, not a substitute for feedback from a teacher.

Use Repeat After Me for independent English practice

Choose English as your target and Italian, German, Spanish or French as your starting language. Begin with a sentence category in Listen & Translate mode. Adjust the pause so you have time to speak, and use Slow first if you need another hearing at a more manageable pace.

Switch to Active Recall when you recognize the phrases. Mark difficult sentences honestly. Add illustrated dialogues to hear how turns fit together, then try Listen & React to check whether you understand a suitable response.

What solo practice can and cannot do

Independent repetition gives you a way to rehearse without arranging a lesson or a partner. Repeat After Me does not listen to your voice or provide automated pronunciation scores. For personalized correction and unpredictable conversation, add a teacher or language partner when you can. Use the app to prepare and revisit phrases between those conversations.

Try it with your next sentence.
