What should work without Wi-Fi?

Check three things before you leave: the lesson text opens, its audio plays, and your progress stays saved. Some apps download the interface but stream the recordings. A useful offline check is to turn on airplane mode and play a lesson you have not used before.

For a trip, prepare greetings, ordering food and asking for directions. Focus on saying a few requests clearly and recognizing likely replies. Offline practice is preparation; it is not live translation.

A simple offline practice session

1. Keep the session small — one situation, a handful of sentences. Read the meaning before you begin.
2. Listen to each sentence once without speaking. Notice where the speaker pauses.
3. Repeat aloud, then listen again to compare the sounds.
4. Cover the translation and try to recall the phrase from its meaning.
5. Return to the sentences you could not recall the next day.

Use Repeat After Me without a connection

The iOS app ships with its lessons and audio inside it. There is no download step in the app and nothing to cache topic by topic — install it from the App Store, and every sentence you own is already on the device. Choose the language you speak and the language you want to learn, then start a sentence topic in Listen & Translate mode. Use the pause to say each line aloud. When the words feel familiar, try Active Recall.

Start with the free lessons; a single one-time purchase unlocks the whole library at once. Make or restore that purchase while you are online — that is the only part which needs a connection — then try a topic in airplane mode before you leave. Your progress stays on your device.

Does the browser version work the same way?

The web app needs to load its resources before they can be available offline, and a browser may clear cached data. For a trip where you need the included audio ready without a connection, use the installed iPhone or iPad app. Downloading the app and making or restoring a purchase still require internet access.
