Learn a language while walking, one phrase at a time
Hands-free language practice works best when you choose the lesson before you start. Use short, familiar audio phrases so you can listen and speak without constantly checking the screen.
Prepare the session before you put your phone away
Choose one topic, check the meaning of unfamiliar sentences and set a pause long enough to repeat comfortably. A lesson that is too difficult becomes background noise. If you cannot hold a whole sentence in memory, choose a shorter phrase or listen again before repeating.
On a walk, keep enough awareness to hear your surroundings. Choose a place where speaking and listening will not distract you from crossing roads or navigating. Quiet chores at home can be an easier starting point.
A ten-minute walking routine
- Before leaving, preview a few sentences and their translations.
- For the first two minutes, listen and repeat without trying to memorize everything.
- For the next five minutes, focus on one feature: word stress, the end of a question or a difficult sound.
- Use the final few minutes to say the meaning before the translation plays.
- When you stop, note which phrases need another session.
Set up screen-off practice in the app
In Repeat After Me, choose a sentence topic and start Listen & Translate. Use Slow first and adjustable pauses to make space for your own voice. The iOS app supports background and lock-screen playback, including controls from your AirPods.
Start playback before locking the screen. Save self-rating and changing topics for a moment when you can stop and look at the phone. Listen & React is an on-screen comprehension exercise; use it later, rather than treating every app activity as hands-free.
Keep listening active
Repeat the line or predict the translation instead of letting audio run unattended. If you are not somewhere you can speak, listen for the words you would stress and practise aloud later. A short session you can follow is a better routine than a long playlist you barely notice.
Try it with your next sentence.
