Italian listening practice for beginners
Start Italian listening practice with a situation you recognize, such as ordering at a café. Short phrases make it easier to connect the sound to its meaning and leave enough attention to practise speaking.
Try a small café exercise
Read these examples, then say each one slowly. These are practice prompts for this guide, not an exact transcript of a particular app lesson.
- Un caffè, per favore. — A coffee, please.
- Quanto costa? — How much does it cost?
- Il conto, per favore. — The bill, please.
Notice the stressed final syllable in caffè. Keep the words in a request together as a phrase rather than giving every word the same pause. After listening to a model, cover the Italian and try to say the request from its English meaning.
Listen once for meaning, once for sound
On the first pass, work out what the speaker wants. On the next pass, pay attention to one sound or stress pattern. Then repeat aloud. If you check the translation after every word, you can lose the overall shape of the sentence.
Stay with a handful of phrases until you can recognize them without reading. Add new material gradually, and revisit yesterday’s difficult lines before moving on.
Practise Italian in Repeat After Me

- Start with a greetings category or, in the full library, a restaurant and café topic.
- Use Listen & Translate, with Slow first and enough pause time to respond.
- Repeat the sentence and use the self-rating controls to identify difficult phrases.
- Try Active Recall to produce the Italian before the answer is revealed.
Add a conversation when single lines feel comfortable
Illustrated dialogues let you hear requests and replies in a situation. Listen for who is speaking and what they want, then rehearse one turn aloud. Listen & React adds a different challenge: hear a line and choose a suitable reply. Use it to check comprehension instead of relying only on your ability to copy sounds.
Try it with your next sentence.
