Spanish travel phrases to practise before your trip

A useful travel phrase is one you can remember when you need it. Before your trip, practise a few requests aloud, plus a way to ask someone to repeat or slow down. Prepare for the reply as well as the opening line.

Start with these practical requests

  • Un café, por favor. — A coffee, please.
  • La cuenta, por favor. — The bill, please.
  • ¿Dónde está la estación? — Where is the station?
  • ¿Cuánto cuesta? — How much does it cost?
  • ¿Puede repetir, por favor? — Could you repeat, please?
  • Más despacio, por favor. — More slowly, please.

These are general practice examples, not an exact app lesson transcript. Local wording and accents vary. Practise the request you are most likely to need, rather than trying to memorize a long list before departure.

Turn the list into a rehearsal

Picture a specific moment: you are at the counter, ready to order. Say your request without looking. Then imagine the next question. Could it be about quantity, price or where you want to sit? Practise recognizing the situation instead of memorizing only one side of the exchange.

For each phrase, listen, repeat, check the meaning and recall it again a few minutes later. If you cannot retrieve it, shorten the session to three phrases and return to them tomorrow.

Choose Spanish as your target language. The full library includes restaurant and café, shopping, and directions and transport topics, alongside illustrated dialogues. Begin with Listen & Translate, leave a pause to speak, then use Active Recall to test whether you can produce the request.

Use Listen & React to practise choosing a reply to a line you hear. The installed iOS app includes audio for offline practice, which is useful before a flight or during a stay with unreliable Wi-Fi. Install the app before you travel, and make the one-time purchase if you want the full library — it unlocks everything at once, so there is no per-topic download to remember.

A manageable week before departure

Spend the first two days on greetings and polite requests. Add ordering and paying on the next two days, then practise transport questions. Use the last days to revisit difficult phrases and rehearse mixed situations. Keep a written backup for addresses and essential travel details; a practice app is not an emergency translation service.
